Holiday travel planning is now in full swing. According to AAA, over 100 million people in the U.S. traveled for the holiday season in 2017 with increases expected for the 2018 holiday season.

At Branded, we were curious if our users are among those who plan to travel this holiday season. We conducted a poll to ask if our our users plan to travel by plane or car this holiday season. The poll was conducted on September 21, 2018, and 16,368 users responded.

Overall, 17 percent of our users say they plan to take at least one trip by plane this holiday season with an additional 21 percent saying they might travel by plane but have not firmed up plans yet.

Our research found that younger users are more likely than older users to say they plan to take a plane trip during the holiday season. Approximately 21 percent of Millennials (age 22-38) are planning a plane trip, compared to 18 percent of Gen X (age 39-50), 13 percent of Baby Boomers (age 51-69) and 10 percent of the Silent Generation (age 70+).

Across the generations, men are more likely than women to say they plan to take a plane trip during the holiday season. Approximately 25 percent of Millennial men, 24 percent of Gen X men, 17 percent of Baby Boomer men and 12 percent of Silent Generation men plan to take a plane trip during the holidays. In contrast, 18 percent of Millennial women, 14 percent of Gen X women, 10 percent of Baby Boomer women and 8 percent of Silent Generation women intend to take a plane trip for the holidays.

Our poll also asked our users if they plan to travel by car this holiday season. Overall, 31 percent of our users say they plan to take at least one trip by car this holiday season with an additional 31 percent saying they might take a car trip.

Younger users are also more likely than older users to take car trips this holiday season. Approximately 35 percent of Millennials and 29 percent of Gen X say they intend to take at least one road trip during the holiday season, compared to 25 percent of Baby Boomers and 25 percent of the Silent Generation.

The data on road trips shows more variation when examined by gender than the results on plane trips. Roughly 35 percent of Millennial men intend to take at least one road trip during the holidays, compared to 36 percent of Millennial women. Among Gen X users, 34% of men are planning a holiday road trip compared to 26 percent of women. About 29 percent of Baby Boomer men say they will take a road trip during the holidays versus 23 percent of Baby Boomer women. And 27 percent of Silent Generation men plan to take at least one road trip compared to 23 percent of Silent Generation women.
