With the start of the new year, consumers are starting to plan their vacations for the year. U.S. consumers logged over 1.8 billion trips and spent over $716 billion on vacations last year.

At Branded, we were curious about our users’ travel intentions for the new year. How many trips do our users plan to take in 2019? And where would they visit on a dream vacation? We polled our users and asked them how many vacations they plan to take in 2019. The poll was conducted on January 10, 2019 and 13,727 users responded.

The majority of users – 53 percent – told us they plan to take 1-2 vacations over the course of the year. About 18 percent say they plan to take 3-4 vacations and 6 percent say they plan to take 5 or more vacations during 2019. About 23 percent of users say they do not plan to take any vacations during the year.

Looking across the generations, younger consumers are slightly more likely than older consumers to say they plan to take vacations during 2019. About 81 percent of Millennials (age 22-38) and 79 percent of Gen X (age 39-50) say they plan to take at least one vacation during 2019, compared to 73 percent of Baby Boomers (age 51-69) and 75 percent of the Silent Generation (age 70+).

As part of our research into vacation plans, we also asked our users where they would most like to visit as part of a dream vacation. Paris, London and New York City topped the charts as our users’ dream vacation locales.

While these are top choices across the generations, we do see distinctions across the generations. Millennials pick Paris, London and Tokyo as their top dream vacations destinations. Gen X users select Paris, New York City and London as their dream vacation destinations. Baby Boomers say London, Paris and New York City are their dream vacation destinations. And the Silent Generation pick Paris, London and New York City as their dream vacation destinations.
